If you started to invest when valuations were at peak, It is likely that you will end up losing money as markets correct.
India as an investment destination continues to hold sway given the burgeoning domestic demand, lower interest rates, fall in crude oil prices, all of which helps in improving the economic activity in the country. Furthermore, corporate earnings, which have been languishing over the past few years, may see a revival this year supported by revival in credit demand, various investment initiatives started by the government, reforms playing out in various sectors, etc.

Nifty companies return more in dollar terms since October.

The Nifty’s returns in dollar terms have continued to edge ahead of those pegged to the local currency, helping India emerge as the second-best performer among the world’s top 15 capital markets in the past two months.
Data compiled by ETIG showed that dollar returns at about 11 per cent exceeded rupee-denominated returns since October 9 last year. The rupee has gained 7.88 per cent against the US currency since that date.

At the vanguard of the gains in the broader indices are stocks of large-sized companies known for their high cash-flows, dominant market share, and attractive return ratios.  ICICI Bank (NSE -0.61%) , Bajaj Finance , Axis Bank (NSE -1.27%) , Hindustan Unilever (NSE 0.55%) , HDFC , and  Larsen & Toubro have paced the gains in returns. The rupee’s climb against the US monetary unit has enhanced the performance of these stocks in dollar terms since October.
In the past one year, the Nifty has nominally gained 2.05 per cent ,but  fallen 5.75 per cent in dollar terms . The rupee had hit a low of 74.4 against the dollar in October before the rebound helped the local unit gain 7.88 per cent.

The rupee had hit a low of 74.4 against the dollar in October before the rebound helped the local unit gain 7.88% to date.

Tracking the performance of the Nifty in dollar terms is one of the crucial barometers for foreign investors as it helps them gauge the attractiveness of Indian equities vis-a-vis other emerging markets. Foreign investors own 45 per cent of the Nifty's free float, underscoring the importance of tracking the performance of the Nifty in dollar terms. The robust stock returns of 9-32 per cent between October 9 and Wednesday in the index bellwethers show that foreign investors have gained considerably from their dollar investments in India. Separately, the dollar returns of the Indian and Indonesian markets have been robust since October 9 last year. Dollar returns from the Indian markets were 10.8 per cent since October 9. Among the emerging markets, dollar returns from Indonesia have been the highest at 16.6 per cent. By contrast, equities in France, Germany, the US, the UK, and Japan are down in the range of 7-10 per cent since October last year .
In the past one year, Bajaj Finance has returned the highest in rupee terms, at 40.6 per cent. In dollar terms, Bajaj Finance yielded 27 per cent returns in that period. But since October 9, Bajaj Finance has returned 29.3 per cent in dollar terms and 22.5 per cent in rupee terms.

Dear stock investor 2019 may be year of bulls, but D-Street frets about unclear signs.

2019 may be year of bulls, but D-Street frets about unclear signs.

Stock investors could rack gains in 2019 but they may have to brace for sharp swings amid uncertainties over the general election and the US economy. A majority of 26 top money managers and research heads of brokerages polled by ET, however, said the Nifty will be up 6-17 per cent by December, eclipsing previous records. Axis Bank NSE 1.92 %, HDFC Bank NSE 0.27 %, ICICI Bank NSE 0.54 % and Infosys are among top stock picks for 2019.

Restrained inflation, soft crude oil prices, and the likelihood of slowing global growth should lower the bond yields in India, where uncertainties about the outcome of this summer’s general elections could make the rupee a bit more volatile, another ET survey of market experts showed.

HIGHLIGHTS

·  According to an ET poll, Nifty will be up 6-17 per cent by December.
·  Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Infosys are among top stock picks for 2019.
·  Nobody expects the market indices to end lower.
The majority of the 25 participants polled in this survey said the benchmark bond yield could fall 25-45 basis points from the current level of 7.45 per cent.
The more optimistic participants believe the gauge could drop below 7 per cent. The rupee, meanwhile, could trade in the 69-73 range against the dollar, with political uncertainty having an exaggerated impact on the local currency in the run up to the national poll, which is likely to be held in April-May.
The market will take into account political risk in the run-up to elections, so there will be higher uncertainty,” said Nilesh Shah, MD, Kotak Mahindra AMC. “The biggest concern for markets is the formation of the government after the elections and the economic agenda .

CLSA sets Nifty year-end target at 11,000; says re-rating unlikely in 2019

Foreign brokerage CLSA has cautioned investors to brace for volatility in the market going ahead and has set a December-end target of 11000 for the Nifty, which means a potential upside of 2 .5 per cent.

The Nifty ended up 55.10 points, or 0.5 per cent, at 10727.35 on Friday.

Above-average valuations and political uncertainty make a rerating unlikely in 2019, the brokerage said. Even as there is a high possibility of double-digit earnings growth, much of it is priced in, said C .

·  Above-average valuations and political uncertainty make a rerating unlikely in 2019
·  The brokerage prefers stocks which are strong structural stories.
·  we expect single-digit 2019 market returns, at best,” said the brokerage.

FOREIGN & DOMESTIC FLOWS

Given the political uncertainty and possible fallout of the crisis in non-banking finance companies, downward pressure on domestic flows is possible and foreign flows are likely to remain tepid, according to CLSA.

Domestic flows gathered pace after Narendra Modi came to power in 2014. However, flows came down to $1-1.5 billion during FY19 from the peak of about $3 billion a month in the previous financial year.

“Domestic flows have been a critical support for the markets given that FIIs have seen outflows of $4 billion during this period. Recent state election results may increase fears of an unstable government among retail investors and this could impact market inflows,” said the brokerage

India's path to becoming the 5th biggest economy full of pitfalls

India’s economy grew at a faster pace than most major nations in 2018, and this year, it’s poised to overtake the U.K. to become the world’s fifth-biggest.
But that journey won’t be smooth. The outcome of a general election due by May is a potential pitfall for a nation already battered by emerging market turmoil and a currency rout last year. Also, any attempts by the government to undermine the central bank’s freedom and raid its surplus capital may spook investors and carry damaging c.
